Fuel Controller 

Based in Budapest 

 

 

Purpose of the Position:
The Fuel Controller plays a pivotal role in managing, analysing, and optimizing Wizz Air’s jet fuel and related costs, which represent approximately 40% of our operational expenses. This role ensures the effective stewardship of resources, enhances financial efficiency, and supports Wizz Air’s ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) principles. The position involves close collaboration with partner departments and direct exposure to C-suite executives, contributing to critical decision-making processes.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Fuel Cost Management: Lead the annual budgeting cycle for fuel-related expenses and provide ongoing cost monitoring, month-end reserve calculations, and reporting. Collaborate closely with Flight Operations, Fuel Purchasing, Airport Development, Accounting (AP), Marketing and Treasury to align forecasts and strategies.
  • Audit and System Optimization: Address audit findings and optimize fuel cost management tools, such as SkyMetrix, to enhance cost stewardship and efficiency.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Manage compliance with ETS/CORSIA reporting, involvement in related inventory management and oversee the integration of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) into the fuel cost framework.
  • Sustainability: The role triggers involvement of financial and non-financial support on the company’s Co2 Emission, decision support on these matters.
  • Hedging and Risk Management: Partner with Treasury and Risk Management to develop and steward fuel price hedging strategies, ensuring resilience against market volatility.
  • Benchmarking and Insights: Conduct detailed analyses to benchmark Wizz Air’s fuel efficiency against industry best practices and recommend actionable improvements.
  • Process Scalability: Design and implement scalable processes that support Wizz Air’s growth, ensuring efficiency as operational complexity increases.

 

Development Opportunities:

  • Exposure to a highly dynamic Financial Planning and Controlling team, working at the heart of Wizz Air’s operations.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, or related field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in financial controlling, FP&A, or related analytical roles.
  • Strong proficiency in financial analysis tools and advanced Excel skills.
  • Sound understanding of IFRS accounting principles.
  • Familiarity with ETS/CORSIA regulations and SAF integration is a plus.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving abilities, with a proactive and collaborative approach.

 

Reporting Line:
The Fuel Controller reports to the Senior Manager of Controlling and works closely with cross-functional teams, contributing to both day-to-day operations and strategic initiatives.

This role is critical to Wizz Air’s financial success, driving cost efficiency, regulatory compliance, and strategic fuel management while supporting the company’s sustainability and growth ambitions.
